Job Description:

A versatile systems administrator is needed to join a team that supports a wide array of enterprise services across several operating systems.  Services supported by the team include LDAP, DNS, DHCP, MS Exchange, Cyrus IMAP, file and printing, MS SQL and Oracle database servers, Blackboard, Shibboleth middleware, PeopleSoft, TSM backups, Apache and IIS web servers, SAN, and several departmental applications.  The selected applicant will work in close collaboration with other systems administrators of various skill levels as well as other IT staff.  The successful systems administrator will be broadly skilled and comfortable recommending, implementing and supporting multiple operating systems as appropriate for the task or application.

The systems administrator will also be responsible for:

  • timely creation and maintenance of detailed documentation for all work performed and in progress.
  • occasional travel (to seminars, conferences, off-campus working groups, etc.)
  • maintaining communication and knowledge transfer to peer systems administrators to ensure shared and redundant coverage of services.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in Computer Science or related field, from a college or university accredited by the US Dept. of Education or an internationally recognized accrediting organization.
  • Minimum of two years experience as a systems administrator in a production environment supporting at least one of the following operating systems: AIX, Linux, Solaris, Windows 2000/2003.
  • Demonstrated computer/networking troubleshooting and problem solving capabilities at both the software and hardware levels.

  • Demonstrable experience planning, organizing, documenting, and successfully completing prioritized goals.
  • Demonstrable experience working both independently and as a member of a team.
  • Highly effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrable experience with scripting languages.
  • Applicants must address in their application their ability to work with culturally diverse populations.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Experience working in an academic environment.
  • Four years experience in configuration, operation and maintenance of Unix and/or Linux servers.
  • Four years experience in configuration, operation and maintenance of Windows servers in an Active Directory environment.
  • Two years experience creating and maintaining Active Directory Group Policy Objects in a production environment.
  • Two years experience with directory services (Active Directory, Sun Directory Server.)
  • Two years experience with VMware ESX, Xen, or other virtualization technologies.
  • Two years experience using or supporting a SAN.
  • Two years experience in MS Cluster service for Windows Server 2003 and/or Solaris Cluster software.
  • Two years experience in support of database applications (e.g. Oracle, MS-SQL Server.)
  • Two years experience in support of Tivoli Storage Manager.
  • Four years experience supporting end users and technical staff in the use of Unix/Linux/Windows services
  • One year experience working with SaaS or cloud computing technologies
